On Thursday morning the Confucius Institute at the University of Newcastle will host the Newcastle China Business Forum, with a line up of high-profile speakers who will deliver insights and practical solutions on doing business with China, including engagement strategies and advice on growing a network of China-related businesses.

Director of Confucius Institute at the University of Newcastle, Rhys Palmer, said a strong Australia-China bilateral relationship is vital to growing our national and regional economy.

“China is our largest export market for goods and services, accounting for nearly one third of total exports, and an important source of foreign investment,” Rhys said.

There were 860,000 visitors from China to Australia in 2014, an increase of almost 20 per cent over the previous year, and they spent $5.7 billion while in the country. Australia is also one of the most popular offshore destinations for Chinese students with 150,000 students enrolling here in 2014.

“The Confucius Institute’s Newcastle China Business Forum brings together the region’s business and industry leaders to strengthen the economic links between China and the Hunter region,” Rhys continued.

“Newcastle and the Hunter have not been as quick to seize the opportunities of doing business with China as other areas in Australia. Similarly, we have a relatively lower rate of foreign investment and visitors from China compared to other cities.”

“This forum is ideal for business already China-active or early stage SMEs and mid-size companies ready to engage with China.”

Attendees will learn how to focus business to develop and refine a China strategy and also how local businesses can work together to make the City of Newcastle a destination that works with the China market and welcomes Chinese interest to our region for business, investment, education and tourism.

The Newcastle China Business Forum 2015 is presented by the the Confucius Institute and the City of Newcastle and sponsored by NAB with support from the Hunter Business Chamber.

The Confucius Institute at the University of Newcastle works with business, government, educational and community partners to strengthen and expand exchange and cooperation between China and the local regions. The institute also plays a major role in expanding the University’s engagement with China.
